The Creation, the grand-finale concert of York Symphony Orchestra's (YSO) New Beginnings season, will take the audience on a journey through a musical account of the biblical creation of the world on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. The performance will exclusively feature Franz Joseph Haydn's epic masterwork The Creation, and audience members will be treated to a first look at the 2015-2016 season.
"This concert presents an epic biblical story performed to Haydn's magnum opus, which leads the audience on a journey through the creation of the world," said Golan. "This one piece will constitute the entire evening's performance, starting with "And God said, let there be light!" to begin the journey from darkness to light through the creation of the animals on land and sea."
Haydn's Masterwork The Creation is considered his greatest work. As Beethoven's teacher and a friend of Mozart, he was considered "father of the symphony" and "father of the string quartet," giving greater significance to those genres of music as they are known today.
York Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the York Symphony Chorus and three standout vocal soloists who will present the English translation of the piece, accompanied by a visual presentation to guide the audience on the journey.
"This concert will require an unusually high level of endurance and concentration for both myself as the conductor and for the musicians," said Golan. "To have one epic masterwork take up the entire event will provide the audience with a special York Symphony Orchestra experience, as the musicians and chorus members embark on a musical tour de force."
The audience will also enjoy a special first-look at the Orchestra's plans for the 2015-2016 season, and guests will have the opportunity to be the first to buy subscription packages for the season.
"We're very excited to share our plans for 2015-2016, including some very special surprises," said Golan.
The York Symphony Orchestra will present The Creation at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in downtown York on Saturday, May 9 at 7:30 p.m. The new, reduced ticket prices will apply, starting at $9 for the public and $5 for students.
