From a groundbreaking composition by one of the hottest young composers today to a galactic classical masterpiece, the York Symphony Orchestra (YSO) will present New Frontiers Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. This space-themed concert will feature a special electro-acoustic performance and a unique visual presentation that will take the audience on a journey through outer space.

"This celestial-themed concert continues our presentation of new beginnings by taking the audience on an exploration of the cosmos," said Lawrence Golan, YSO's new music director and conductor. "The electro-acoustic performance during Mothership, an exciting new work for orchestra and electronica by Mason Bates, will feature for the first time ever, one of our musicians playing on a laptop with the full orchestra."

Originally debuted by the YouTube Symphony Orchestra in 2011 to an audience of 1.8 million, Mothership imagines the orchestra as a mothership that is "docked" by several visiting soloists (including a laptop) that create a high-energy performance blending symphonic sounds with 21st century rhythms.

New Frontiers will also feature A la busca del mas alla (In Search of the Beyond) by Joaquin Rodrigo, the same composer who wrote the famous Concierto de Aranjez for guitar and orchestra, followed by The Planets by Gustav Holst. The Planets will guide the audience from Mercury to Neptune and beyond and will include a unique, accompanying visual presentation by Ben Gondrez, Planetary Scientist at the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery in Colorado.

"The Planets is a galactic masterpiece that will offer both a musical and visual journey through outer space." said Golan. "Each movement represents the astrological character of a planet and will take guests on an exploration of our solar system."

The York Symphony Orchestra will present New Frontiers at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center in downtown York on Saturday, March 21 at 7:30 p.m. The new, reduced ticket prices will apply, starting at $9 for the public and $5 for students.
