Utah Symphony Continues 'Films In Concert' Series with Screening of Award-Winning Western Classic HIGH NOON

Join the Utah Symphony on February 17, 2018 at 7:00 PM for a full-length feature presentation of Stanley Kramer's great American Western "High Noon," while the Utah Symphony performs the soundtrack live to picture. This world premiere performance is in collaboration with the Utah Museum of Fine Arts' new exhibit, "Go West! Art of the American Frontier" from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. In his Oscar winning role for best actor, Gary Cooper stars as a newlywed town marshal that stands alone to defend his community against a gang of revenge-seeking outlaws. Enjoy Dimitri Tiomkin's award-winning score performed live by the Utah Symphony to this beloved Western film.

Dimitri Tiomkin was a Russian-born American film composer and conductor who was best known for his western scores for films including "Duel in the Sun," "Red River," "High Noon," "The Big Sky," "Gunifight at O.K. Corrall," and "Last Train from Gun Hill. Mr. Tiomkin received 22 Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars, three for Best Original Score for "High Noon," "The High and the Mighty," and "The Old Man and the Sea," and one for Best Original Song for "The Ballad of High Noon."

A new addition to the Utah Symphony season, the "Films in Concert" series has been hailed a smashing success, helping to bring audience members of all backgrounds to the symphony. The season opened September 7th with the first of the Indiana Jones chronicles "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and continued with Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" on October 24th. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," the second Harry PotterTM film, was shown December 21, and just recently the Utah Symphony added "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" as the series finale, set for June 27 and 28, 2018.

Conner Gray Covington was recently appointed as the Assistant Conductor of the Utah Symphony, a position he began in the 2017-18 season. This past June, he completed his tenure as the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In that position he worked closely with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Opera Theater and was mentored by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He recently made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra sharing the podium with Ludovic Morlot. Mr. Covington began his career as Assist Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. A two-time recipient (2014, 2017) of a Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation U.S., he recently worked with the Nashville Symphony as a featured conductor in the 2016 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview presented by the League of American Orchestras.
