The Vermont Symphony Orchestra Opens Masterworks Series, 10/26

The VSO offers a five-concert Saturday Masterworks series at the Flynn Center in Burlington, with additional select Sunday Matinee performances in Rutland (beginning at 3:00 pm). All Flynn concerts begin at 8:00 pm and are preceded at 7:00 pm by Musically Speaking, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening's program.
On October 26, the VSO commemorate two sesquicentennials in its season opener: Richard Strauss's birth (with a performance of his brilliant tone poem, Death and Transfiguration); and the Civil War (with two works that pay homage to that seminal period in American history). Danielpour's Come Up From The Fields, Father, is a setting of a Walt Whitman poem; the solo cello portrays a soldier's bereaved mother. Copland's Lincoln Portrait uses words and music to create a moving tribute to the man who still inspires Americans to the twin goals of freedom and democracy. We take advantage of our wonderful soloist, Sharon Robinson, to perform Schelomo, a free-form cello concerto in one movement in which Bloch describes the richness and pomp of King Solomon.
