Throughout the year, hundreds of gifted classical music students participate in the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, one of the oldest and most highly regarded youth orchestras in the nation. PYO provides talented young musicians from across the tri-state area with exceptional musical training and many opportunities to perform. (See season schedule below.)

President and Music Director Louis Scaglione is proud of the growth of PYO and the talent and dedication of the students. He said, "During last year's 75th Anniversary celebratory season, we took great pride in the performances of our students and appreciated the wide support of our organization. Under the direction of our outstanding faculty, our students rose to every occasion and performed at the highest level. In addition, we are thrilled to have seen a 50% increase in auditions for this season."

The organization is comprised of five independent ensembles designed to meet specific needs and experience levels of students selected through a competitive audition process. The anchor group is the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra (PYO) ensemble, directed by President and Music Director Maestro Louis Scaglione, featuring 125 gifted instrumentalists who range in age from 14-21. Young musicians 10-18 years old are featured in the PYO's companion ensemble, the Philadelphia Young Artists Orchestra, led by Director and Conductor Maestra Rosalind Erwin. Bravo Brass is an all brass ensemble for promising high-school instrumentalists and directed by Curtis Institute Dean of Faculty and Students, Paul Bryan. PRYSM (Philadelphia Region Youth String Music), as well as PRYSM Young Artists provides string ensemble and sectional master class instruction for beginning and intermediate musicians ages 6-14. The director and conductor of PRYSM is Gloria DePasquale, cellist with The Philadelphia Orchestra. PRSYM Young Artists is conducted by Jessica Villante. Tune Up Philly is the organization's after-school program directed by Paul Smith that offers musical instruction to children in economically challenged areas of Philadelphia.

From November until June, audiences can enjoy outstanding classical concerts that offer the talented young musicians invaluable opportunities to perform in professional venues. (The entire season concert schedule is below.) There is a full schedule of performances throughout the year, which are listed below. The opening concert, featuring the organization's flagship ensemble, The Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, is November 22 at 3 p.m. in Verizon Hall at the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts. Maestro Louis Scaglione will conduct an exciting performance of R. Strauss's Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op.28, Glière's Concerto for Horn and Orchestra in B-flat major, Op.91, featuring soloist Jennifer Montone, principal horn of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and Brahms' Symphony No.2 in D major, Op.73. Tickets are $15-$25, and can be purchased through Ticket Philadelphia by calling 215.893.1999. For more information, visit www.pyos.org.
