The Canticum Novum Singers, Harold Rosenbaum, Conductor and Artistic Director, will present music of Josquin Des Prez and Handel in concert on Saturday, April 28 at 8:00 PM at Advent Lutheran Church, 93rd and Broadway in Manhattan.
This will be a program of Josquin Des Prez' Missa Pange Lingua and selections from G.F. Handel's Chandos Anthems. Maestro Rosenbaum writes of these works, ""Returning to conduct Josquin Des Prez's Missa Pange Lingua, as I do every ten years or so, I am struck more than ever not only by the perfection of this, the greatest and most profound piece before Bach, but its transcendent beauty and utter serenity it exudes. Perhaps in this deeply troubled time we live in, it will give solace to those who are fortunate to bask in it, and perhaps even optimism and long-lasting joy....Handel's Chandos Anthems are truly little-known masterpieces. Overshadowed by operas and the Messiah, they certainly deserve to be heard regularly. From the Psalms, Handel chose the Biblical texts himself, as he always preferred to do, and then molded the music to fit the mood and spirit of the words. Each anthem begins with a Sinfonia or Sonata. The body of each anthem consists of arias and choral movements. Never over-long or repetitive, they are always satisfying musically while constantly changing in mood."
Tickets for the April 28 concert are $25, $20 for students/seniors, available at the door or in advance at https://cvi.yapsody.com/event/index/133156/masterpieces-by-josquin-and-handel. For more information, call 914-582-3915 or visit http://www.canticumnovum.org/season.html.
