The Brevard Music Center in partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) presents itsSundays with Brevard Music Center concert on May 3, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. in the Reuter Center on the campus of UNC Asheville. The program will feature Brevard Music Center artist faculty member Steve Cohen with pianist Kay Kim performing works by Horovitz, Copland, and Yoshimasu.
Steve Cohen was the long-time principal clarinet and frequent soloist with the New Orleans Symphony and its successor, the Louisiana Philharmonic, from 1975-2004, and has been principal clarinet at the Brevard Music Center since 1979. Moving to Chicago to become clarinet professor and coordinator of the winds, brass, and percussion at Northwestern University, he has played several seasons as principal clarinet with the Music of the Baroque orchestra, has played on numerous occasions with the Chicago Symphony. He maintains a very busy schedule each year with master classes and recitals that have taken him
throughout Japan, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Korea, Europe, and from coast to coast in the United States. He is an artist/clinician for Buffet clarinets and a Legere reed artist. Born in New York City to a Juilliard trained clarinetist, his teachers have included Loren Kitt, Larry McDonald, Karl Leister, and Robert Marcellus.
As an active chamber musician, pianist Kay Kim enjoys concertizing domestically and internationally each season. She performed in recitals with the members of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Paris Opera Orchestra, Chicago Chamber Musicians, the recipients of Stradivari Society Award, as well as with the faculties of the Juilliard School, Northwestern University, and Indiana University among others. She has been one of the pianists for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's conductor's rehearsals for over a decade and performed in CSO's subscription concerts conceived by Maestro Pierre Boulez. As a member of a musical ambassador group Trio Chicago and Friends, Ms. Kim traveled to over 20 countries presenting a comprehensive array of American music since 2006. Ms. Kim teaches accompanying at Northeastern Illinois University and coaches chamber music at Northwestern University. A native of South Korea, Ms. Kim attended Seoul National University for her undergraduate study and University of Michigan for her graduate degrees. She holds a doctoral degree in piano performance from Northwestern University.
The Sundays with Brevard Music Center series is presented October through May by the Brevard Music Center, a world-renowned summer music institute and festival. The Music Center presents 80 public concerts in the summer season, more han 30 of which have no admission charge.
The 2015 season of the Brevard Music Center opens on Saturday, June 20, 2015.
