The newest Northwest Associated Arts (NWAA) chorus, SilverSounds, is a group of retired folks who believe "You're never too old to rock 'n roll." Their second concert ever, the ensemble combines energetic singing with clever staging and choreography to create a fun-filled show, press notes state. In Rockin' with the Oldies they perform songs from the Sixties -- a time of cultural upheaval, change and conflict – and a period that produced some of the most vibrant and lasting music of the 20th century. From dance crazes to folk rock, from Soul to surf music, Rockin' with the Oldies will celebrate the artists who shaped pop music history.
In Rockin' the Boat, artistic director Brian Winnie takes ChoralSounds and the audience on a chronological voyage of discovery into some of the great music of stage and screen. Examining the vast differences between songs originally written for chorus and songs that were always intended as solo numbers, Rockin' the Boat includes many of the great choruses from stage and screen. Including everything from Mozart's Dies Irae (Amadeus) and John Williams' Duel of Fates (Star Wars: Phantom Menace) to Sondheim's Sweeney Todd and 21 Guns (American Idiot).
Under Brian's direction, ChoralSounds has refocused its energy on developing polished choral performance, and this program will give the audience the opportunity to hear the fruits of that effort. Of course, no ChoralSounds concert would be complete without moments of silliness, and Brian has some surprises up his sleeve as we celebrate music's gifts to movies and theater.
ChoralSounds Northwest, a Burien-based chorus of 50 men and women, has developed a loyal and growing following with family-friendly shows that offer much more than the usual "choral concert." ChoralSounds Northwest and SilverSounds Northwest are both part of Northwest Associated Arts, which includes KidSounds Northwest, YouthSounds Northwest, and TeenSounds Northwest.
