Music Director Robert Spano will lead the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) in a space- themed program June 13 and 15, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. The concerts will include R. Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra - popularized after its use in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey - and Holst's The Planets.

On Friday, June 14, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., the Orchestra will host its inaugural "First Fridays with the ASO" concert - an hour-long performance featuring the "Sunrise" from Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra and Holst's The Planets led by Mr. Spano.

During the ASO's 2013-14 season, the ASO will offer five "First Friday" classical concerts to be held at 6:00 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall. These concerts, which will last approximately one hour without intermission, will feature abbreviated versions of the week's subscription performances.

Single tickets for the June 13 and 15 performances are $24-$75 and tickets for the "First Friday" concert on June 14 are $25. Additional details are available at aso.org.

R. STRAUSS Also sprach Zarathustra: The protagonist in Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra is based upon the ancient Persian prophet, also known as Zoroaster. In Thus Spake Zarathustra, the prophet leaves the solitude of his mountain refuge to share his wisdom with mankind.

HOLST The Planets: Gustav Holst once remarked: "As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me." And it was Holst's lifelong interest in astrology that inspired his most popular orchestral work, The Planets.

Music Director Robert Spano, currently in his 12th season as music director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is recognized internationally as one of the most imaginative conductors today. Since 2001 he has invigorated and expanded the Orchestra's repertoire while elevating the ensemble to new levels of international prominence and acclaim.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), currently in its 68th season, is one of America's leading orchestras. It performs great music, presents leading artists, educates and engages music lovers. The ASO serves as the cornerstone for artistic development and music education in the southeast. It performs more than 200 concerts each year for a combined audience of more than a half million in a full schedule of performances. It also reaches more than 67,000 students and underserved members of the community through its education and community outreach programs.

Single tickets for the June 13 and 15 performances are $24-$75. Tickets for the "First Friday" concert on June 14 are $25.
