New Jersey Festival Orchestra to Perform at the Morris Museum

Mahler, that composer of gigantic symphonies, will get a transformation on November 8 at 3:00PM at the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum when NJ Festival Orchestra presents his Ninth Symphony with a brand new instrumentation.

Considered by some to be the most monumental musical creation ever written, Mahler's mighty 9th is rarely performed due to its epic proportions and complex orchestral requirements. Now New Jersey Festival Chamber Orchestra presents a New Jersey premiere of Klaus Simon's jaw-dropping "bonsai" re-orchestration of this celebrated work.

Simon's reduced orchestration expertly retains the exquisite architecture and expressive power of Mahler's original symphony while adding a new white-hot intensity. "It's like experiencing the magic of Mahler under the magnifying glass," commented NJFO Music Director David Wroe. "This breathtaking version - a first for New Jersey - could be life changing!"

According to Dr. Norman Luka, President of the NJFO Board of Trustees, this new take on Mahler is in keeping with NJFO's mission to present a series of bold and innovative initiatives guaranteed to revitalize the concert-going experience.

Continued Wroe, "A thrust of our concerts this year encompasses presenting the familiar in unfamiliar contexts, or rather leading traditional winners into the arena in shiny new armor. This concert will make accessible, through this new and vibrant version, the musical poetry of one of the greatest artistic minds the world has known. I predict musicians and audience alike will be exhausted (in a good way!) and changed by the experience."

Presented in collaboration with Morris Museum, this New Jersey premiere is made possible, in part, by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; the F.M. Kirby Foundation and the Victoria Foundation.

Tickets are $40 General Public; $35 Members/Seniors/Subscribers; and $25 Students (18 & under or a valid college ID).

The Bickford Theatre is an integral part of the Morris Museum, located at 6 Normandy Heights Road in Morristown, NJ, and offers free parking and full accessibility.
