WHAT: Esteemed conductor Neeme Järvi leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in three performances, Friday, April 17, at 8 pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19, at 2 pm. The program features LA Phil Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour as the soloist in Suk's Fantasie, the composer's brilliant and rarely heard fantasy-concerto. Bookending the Suk work are two offerings from Brahms - his Tragic Overture and the dramatic Fourth Symphony, for which the LA Phil won its most recent Grammy award.

Over his long and highly successful career Neeme Järvi has held positions with orchestras across the world. He is currently Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Artistic Director of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, as well as holding titles with the Residentie Orkest, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In August 2014 he took up his latest position as Head of Conducting/Artistic Advisor of the Gstaad Conducting Academy. Recent and future seasons include engagements with the major European Orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, as well as the major orchestras in the USA and throughout Asia. He also continues his regular relationships with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (for a number of recording and concert projects). Järvi has recorded with Chandos for over 30 years and his most recent discs include Tchaikovsky's Complete Ballets with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, symphonies and orchestral music by Swiss composer Joachim Raff and music by Saint-Saëns and Atterberg. Though highlights of his extensive discography include critically acclaimed complete orchestral cycles by many of the great composers Järvi has also championed less widely known composers such as Wilhelm Stenhammar, Hugo Alfvén and Niels Gade and composers from his native Estonia including Rudolf Tobias and Arvo Pärt. Throughout his career he has also recorded with Deutsche Grammophon, BIS and EMI. A prolific recording artist, he has amassed a discography of nearly 500 recordings.

Martin Chalifour began his tenure as Principal Concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1995. Apart from his LA Phil duties he maintains an active solo career, playing a diverse repertoire of more than 60 concertos. Chalifour has appeared as soloist with conductors Pierre Boulez, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Sir Neville Marriner, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Outside the U.S., he has played solos with the Auckland Philharmonia, the Montreal Symphony, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of Taiwan, and the Malaysian Philharmonic, among others. Chalifour is a frequent guest at several summer music festivals, including the Sarasota Festival, the Mainly Mozart Festival, and the Reno Chamber Music Festival. In December 2014, at the same Nevada festival, Chalifour was featured with his friend and colleague Noah Bendix-Balgley in a special program entitled "The Concertmasters of the Berlin Phil and the LA Phil." Maintaining close ties with his native country, he has returned there often to teach and perform as soloist with various Canadian orchestras, most recently with the Vancouver Symphony and Bramwell Tovey. Martin Chalifour has recorded solo and chamber music for the Telarc, Northstar and Yarlung labels.
