NY Philharmonic Matthias Pintscher With Violinist Renaud Capuçon

Matthias Pintscher will make his New York Philharmonic subscription debut conducting the New York Premiere of his mar'eh, with Renaud Capuçon as soloist; Ravel's Alborada del gracioso; and Stravinsky's The Firebird (complete). The concerts will take place Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 22 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, February 23 at 8:00 p.m.

Matthias Pintscher writes: "'Mar'eh' is a Hebrew word that means 'face, sign.' [It] can also mean the aura of a face, a beautiful vision, something wonderful which suddenly appears before you.... mar'eh continually materializes new sounds out of nothing, with the violin acting as protagonist."

Renaud Capuçon and Matthias Pintscher have collaborated in performances of mar'eh numerous times. In its review of their January 2018 performances, the Los Angeles Times wrote that Renaud Capuçon "has an ideally lithe tone and ... was able to make mysterious melodies come out of, and after a long flight, fade back into the mists.... Getting all the details right must have been an exacting task, but Pintscher made the performance seem as if it were happening on its own."

The Saturday Matinee Concert on February 23 at 2:00 p.m. opens with Ibert's Trois pièces brèves and Gounod's Petite symphonie, for Winds, performed by Principal Flute Robert Langevin, Acting Principal Oboe Sherry Sylar, guest oboist Ryan Roberts, Principal Clarinet Anthony McGill, guest clarinetist Pavel Vinnitsky, Principal Bassoon Judith LeClair, bassoonist Roger Nye, Acting Principal Horn Richard Deane, and hornist R. Allen Spanjer. The program also features Stravinsky's The Firebird.

The Orchestra's concerts will be complemented by a Nightcap concert on February 23, 2019, curated by composer / conductor Matthias Pintscher and featuring works by composers he admires, including Berg and Cage, performed by Philharmonic musicians. The Kravis Nightcap series presents six late-night, cabaret-style concerts curated by contemporary composers who engage in conversation about the music with host Nadia Sirota, The Marie-Josée Kravis Creative Partner. Taking place at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse after select subscription programs, these events explore themes related to those Philharmonic concerts in a casual setting.

The New York Philharmonic will offer an allotment of free tickets to young people ages 13-26 for the concert on Friday, February 22 as part of Philharmonic Free Fridays.

Single tickets start at $33. Single tickets to the Nightcap performance are $25. (Ticket prices subject to change.) Tickets to Open Rehearsals are $22. A limited number of $18 tickets for select concerts may be available for students within 10 days of the performance at nyphil.org/rush, or in person the day of; valid identification is required.
