Mozart@262 Festival and More Set for January 2018 at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra

In January 2018, Mozart rules at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO)! To celebrate the 262nd anniversary of the great composer's birth, TSO Music Director Peter Oundjian and Canadian conductor Bernard Labadie are co-curating the Mozart@262 Festival-four compelling programs presented at three different venues.
Mozart@262 Festival: January 10-21, 2018
• Majestic Mozart on January 10 & 13: Bernard Labadie leads the TSO in Mozart's Serenade No. 10 "Gran Partita"-an extended and luxurious work scored for 12 wind instruments and double bass-and the composer's final and elegant Symphony No. 39. Presented at Roy Thomson Hall.
• What Makes It Great? Mozart Clarinet Concerto on January 12: In his usual friendly manner, host/conductor Rob Kapilow takes the audience into the heart of the haunting, touching work, which is performed in its entirety in the second half, as TSO Principal Clarinet Joaquin Valdepeñas steps into the spotlight. Presented at Roy Thomson Hall.
• Essential Mozart on January 17 & 18: In this program of Mozart masterworks, TSO Concertmaster Jonathan Crow and Principal Viola Teng Li take centre stage for a dazzling performance of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for Violin and Viola. The Orchestra also delivers the overtures to The Magic Flute and The Impresario, as well as Symphony No. 36 "Linz"-all under the direction of Mozart specialist Bernard Labadie. The January 17 concert takes place at Roy Thomson Hall; the January 18 concert takes place at Koerner Hall.
• Mozart Jupiter Symphony from January 19 to 21: Crowning his final performances in the treasured annual Mozart Festival that he created, Peter Oundjian leads the TSO in the breathtaking Jupiter Symphony. French-Canadian pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin is the guest soloist in the graceful Piano Concerto No. 23. The TSO also welcomes emerging Canadian violinist Adrian Anantawan who performs Rondo for Violin and Orchestra "Haffner" and Adagio for Violin and Orchestra. The January 19 concert takes place at Roy Thomson Hall; both January 20 concerts take place at Koerner Hall; the January 20 performance (3:00pm) takes place at George Weston Recital Hall.
January 25-27, guest conductor John Storgårds returns to the TSO for a program that includes John Estacio's stunning Trumpet Concerto, showcasing the talent of TSO Principal Trumpet Andrew McCandless, and the Canadian Première of Stravinsky's recently rediscovered Funeral Song-a piece he composed in memory of his teacher, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The concert concludes with the celestial music of Gustav Holst-the magnificent suite, The Planets.
On January 31 & February 2, Slovak conductor Juraj Val?uha makes his TSO début with A European Romance. The concert opens with The Enchanted Lake by Liadov, followed by Falla's evocative Nights in the Gardens of Spain, featuring Argentine pianist Ingrid Fliter. Val?uha also leads the TSO in irresistible works by R. Strauss: Don Juan and the exquisite suite from Der Rosenkavalier.
