The Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO) proudly announces a world-class musical tribute to Stax legend and Hall of Fame Songwriter, David Porter, at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, March 23rd, 2019 at 7:30pm. The tribute is set to be conducted by Music Director, Robert Moody.

Porter is not only a musical legend in Memphis but around the world. The creator behind Soul Man, Hold On I'm Comin', Dreamlover, Wrap It Up and Gettin' Jiggy Wit It, Porter has written and produced more than 1,700 releases in his career with sales in excess of 350 million units. These songs have been the soundtrack to generations of music lovers from the 1960s to today. Stars and rising stars of Pop, Soul and Rhythm & Blues join MSO with new full orchestra charts written specifically to celebrate the real "Soul Man!" Some of the artists, such as Porcelan and Jessica Ray, come directly from Made in Memphis Entertainment, Porter's record company. This company was created with a mission of returning the city to its true glory days of Stax and to showcase top local talent to the world.

In addition, Stax legend Rance Allen brings his musical talents to the stage to pay tribute to his longtime friend. Allen, known for an extremely wide vocal range and powerful singing voice, formed The Rance Allen Group with his brothers and they first recorded at Stax Records in the early 70s. The group pioneered the fusion of rock and soul with traditional gospel music. Porter produced and wrote songs for one of their most successful records.

Porter also wrote songs with another Memphis legend, Isaac Hayes, at Stax Records in the 1960s. Their songs became famously recorded and performed by the soul duo, Sam and Dave.

This will be an unforgettable night of music in Memphis!

This tribute concert is part of the MSO's Pops series that includes concerts like the Magic of Memphis Holiday Spectacular, Cirque de la Symphonie, a Tribute to Elvis and the upcoming celebration of John Williams and the music of Star Wars on May the 4th.

David Porter Tribute, sponsored by Orion and Monogram Foods, will be performed Saturday March 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis. Tickets can be purchased online at www.memphissymphony.org, email at tickets@memphissymphony.org, or by calling the MSO Box Office at 901.537.2525. Prices start at only $15 ranging to $88.
