Lynn University's Conservatory of Music Announces 2016-17 Classical Season

Boca Raton - Jon Robertson, dean of Lynn University Conservatory of Music and Philharmonia Guest Conductor, today announced the 2016-2017 concert season.

"Our talented students and extraordinary faculty look forward to sharing the beautiful world of music during our seventh season in the Keith C. and Elaine Johnson Wold Performing Arts Center, a world-class concert hall that enhances our performing artists' musical offerings," said Robertson. "Our 2016-2017 season will present a variety of musical offerings designed to enrich the artistic spirit and nourish the soul. Please join us for a magnificent season."

Concerts run from September through April in the Wold, the Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall or the new Snyder Sanctuary, all located on Lynn's Boca Raton campus.


Lynn Philharmonia

The Lynn Philharmonia sets the standard for professional symphonic training. Now in its 24th season as a full symphony, the Philharmonia continues to present high-quality concerts with a wide-ranging repertoire. Under the musical direction of Maestro Guillermo Figueroa, the Lynn Philharmonia attains a professional level of performance, enjoying tremendous public support for its six annual symphonic programs. The Philharmonia distinguishes itself through its orchestral training program and ensures consistent performance opportunities for every instrumentalist. Series tickets are $180 for orchestra and $157 for mezzanine.

Jefferson Campbell, bassoon

Guest artist Jefferson Campbell is associate professor of bassoon and head of the wind department at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Campbell joins Lynn's own Eric Van der Veer Varner in a program featuring the "noble bassoon."

Mostly Music Series

This unique concert series better acquaints audiences with not only music, but also the lives and artistic development of the Western world's great composers. These concerts feature the conservatory's artist-faculty and students. Actors bring the composers to life through the reading of their letters. Mostly Music was conceived and is hosted by Marshall Turkin and is staged by Jan McArt. Series tickets are $45.

Nov. 17

Mendelssohn

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was born just 18 years after Mozart's death, and many regarded him as Mozart's heir. Like Mozart, he would have a short life span, but still composed some of our best-loved masterpieces. He was also a wonderful correspondent, writing about his visits with such people as Queen Victoria and Goethe.

Shostakovich

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) lived in the Soviet Union where the state considered propaganda the highest aspiration of art. How could he still create his masterworks? This musical journey shares how he became one of the great composers of the 20th century.

Schumann

One of the finest composers of the Romantic era, Robert Schumann (1810-1856) focused on composing only after a hand injury ended his ambitions as a pianist. He was blessed with genius and a loving wife, but spent his final days in a mental institution.

Spotlight No. 2: Music of Eric Ewazen

The audience will love Eric Ewazen after hearing this program. A Music Connoisseur reviewer wrote, "Ewazen sunbathes the ears in triadic sonority and understands the rhythms and rather different complexities of our own fin de siècle. Despite its unabashed Romanticism, this music could not have been written at any other time." This program premieres the 2016 Lynn commissioned work.

Keyboard Master Class with Michael Tsalka

Michael Tsalka earned his bachelors degree from Tel Aviv University; a piano solo diploma from the Scuola Superiore Internazionale del Trio di Trieste; and three degrees, including a doctorate in piano performance, from Temple University. He has presented 75 master classes and lecture-recitals. Tsalka was the artistic director of the Bach Festival in Beijing and co-artistic director of the Nordic Historical Keyboard Festival in Kuopio, Finland.

J.S. Bach: The Art of the Fugue with Keyboardist Michael Tsalka

Performing with equal virtuosity on the harpsichord, fortepiano, clavichord, square piano, chamber organ and modern piano, Tsalka presents a wide span of music, from early Baroque to the present. He will perform on the conservatory's historic fortepiano and its new double-manual harpsichord, built by conservatory student John Weisberg.

Pianist Stanislav Ioudenitch in Recital

Stanislav Ioudenitch, 2001 gold medal winner at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Gasteig in Munich, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. Ioudenitch's recital at Lynn will include music by Liszt, Scarlatti and Rachmaninoff.

Piano Master Classes with Stanislav Ioudenitch

Ioudenitch is professor of piano and artistic director of the International Center for Music at Park University. He also serves on the faculty of the International Piano Academy Lake Como and is the director of the Lake Como Summer Piano School. Conservatory piano students will perform in these master classes.

All Beethoven with Pianist Yael Weiss

Hailed for her visionary interpretations, Weiss has performed at venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Benaroya Hall, the Kennedy Center, Moscow's Bolshoi Hall and London's Wigmore Hall. She has appeared as a soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Brazil Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, The Santa Fe Symphony and the New Bedford Symphony, in addition to performing at Marlboro, Banff, Ravinia, Caramoor and the Seattle Chamber Music festivals. The solo recital is part of the 2017 January Term for pianists "Focus on Beethoven."

Master Class with Yael Weiss

Yael Weiss has been honored with distinguished prizes from The Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition and the Naumburg International Piano Competition. She is a recipient of the Presser Music Award, as well as grants from the American-Israel Cultural Foundation. She studied at the Mannes School of Music and the Peabody Conservatory. Weiss has presented master classes worldwide and served on the faculties of Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, UC Santa Barbara and the Heifetz International Music Institute.

Violin Master Classes with Elmar Oliveira

Internationally renowned performer Elmar Oliveira, Lynn's Distinguished Artist in Residence, is a devoted teacher and promoter of young violinists. He was the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow's prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition.

Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition

Established by Distinguished Artist-in-Residence Elmar Oliveira in collaboration with the Lynn Conservatory of Music, this new violin competition will take place once every three years. The mission is to provide talented violinists, ages 16-32, networking, management, public relations, concert opportunities and a monetary prize. The first panel includes esteemed judges: Andrés Cárdenes, Charles Castleman, Gudny Gudmundsdottir, Daniel Heifetz, Ilya Kaler, Vera Tsu, Wei Ling and Elmar Weingarten. Winners will be chosen through a four-step process, culminating in two performances. Guillermo Figueroa will conduct the Lynn Philharmonia and the finalists. An awards ceremony follows the final concert.

Piano Master Class with Marina Lomazov

Marina Lomazov has given performances in South America, Asia, Europe and in nearly all 50 states. She has performed as soloist with the Boston Pops, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Piccolo Spoleto. She is professor of piano at the University of South Carolina where she is founder and artistic director of the Southeastern Piano Festival.

Violin Master Class with Renata Arado

Renata Arado began violin instruction in the Suzuki method at age two. She was principal second violin of Norway's Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra for 13 years. She has collaborated with Isaac Stern, Julia Fischer, Yefim Bronfman, Joshua Bell and Gil Shaham. This master class will feature students competing in the Lynn Chamber Music Competition. Arado will also join the conservatory faculty on the Mostly Music Mendelssohn concert Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Bassoon Master Class with John Miller

John Miller assumed his position as principal bassoonist of the Minnesota Orchestra in 1971, a position he held until his retirement in 2015. He has also been professor of bassoon at the University of Minnesota for 45 years. He has presented master classes at many of the world's major conservatories. Miller is regarded as one of the leading bassoon pedagogues.

Daniel Shapiro is recognized for his interpretations of Schubert, Mozart, Schumann, Brahms and Beethoven, whose 32-sonata cycle he has performed twice, and as a teacher and coach at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He won the William Kapell International Piano Competition and the American Pianists Association Beethoven Fellowship Award.

The Wind Concerto: Movement 1

Back in the Subways with Roberta Rust and Friends

Every March since 2010, after cellist Dale Henderson played J.S. Bach alone in New York's subways, thousands of musicians in 40 countries have offered Bach's music free to the public. In this second annual event at Lynn, Rust and her colleagues and students offer Bach again, free for the listening.

Bassoon Master Class with Martin Kuuskmann

Grammy-nominated bassoon virtuoso Kuuskmann has earned a reputation as one of the leading solo instrumentalists today.
