LuPone, Ebersole and More To Present Drama League Awards

 The Drama League (Jano Herbosch, President; Roger T. Danforth and Gabriel Shanks, Executive Directors) proudly announces the roster of presenters scheduled to appear for the The 74th Annual Drama League Awards Ceremony and Luncheon on Friday, May 16, 2008 (noon) at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square (1535 Broadway at 46th Street).
 
Christine Ebersole, who was honored with The Drama League's Distinguished Performance Award in 2006, will present this year's award. In addition, Patti LuPone (Gypsy) will present the award for Distinguished Production of a Musical and Christine Baranski (Boeing, Boeing) will present the award for Distinguished Production of a Play.
 
Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid) and James Snyder (Cry-Baby) will present the award for Distinguished Revival of a Musical and Charles Busch (Die Mommie Die!) will present the award for Distinguished Revival of a Play.
 
For The Drama League's three annual specialty awards, producer Roger Berlind will present the award for Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre, former BAM Executive Director Harvey Lichtenstein will present the award for Unique Contribution to the Theatre and Lincoln Center Theatre Artistic Director Andre Bishop will present the Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing.

In The Heights was previously nominated for Drama League Awards during its Off-Broadway run in 2007, and is thus ineligible this season. The Broadway production of Glory Days will be considered next season. The cut-off date for this season's Drama League Awards was Sunday, April 20, 2008.

The Drama League also pays tribute to the season's best performers by including the nominees of The Distinguished Performance Award on a dais.  This season's 70-member dais includes the following performers, one of whom will be honored with the Distinguished Performance Award at the awards ceremony on Friday, May 16:

Earlier this spring,The Drama League announced the recipients of its three annual specialty awards: Paul Gemignani will receive the Distinguished Achievement in Musical Theatre Award, Bartlett Sher will be honored with the Julia Hansen Award for Excellence in Directing, and Ellen Stewart / La Mama E.T.C. will receive the Unique Contribution to the Theatre Award.

Hosted by Harvey Fierstein (A Catered Affair), The 74th Annual Drama League Awards Ceremony and Luncheon is co-chaired by Broadway luminaries Bobby Cannavale (Mauritius), Laurence Fishburne (Thurgood), Peter Gallagher (The Country Girl), Terrence Howard (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof), Cheyenne Jackson (Xanadu),  Laura Linney (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) S. Epatha Merkerson (Come Back, Little Sheba), Rosie Perez (The Ritz), Martha Plimpton (Cymbeline) and Patrick Stewart (Macbeth).

Last season, Drama League Awards were presented to Liev Schreiber (Distinguished Performance), The Coast of Utopia (Distinguished Production of a Play), Spring Awakening  (Distinguished Production of a Musical), Journey's End  (Distinguished Revival of a Play) and Company (Distinguished Revival of a Musical).

The first Drama League Award was presented to actress Katharine Cornell in 1935, making it the oldest National Theatre honor, predating the Tony Awards by twelve years.

In recent years, the Distinguished Performance Award has been accorded to a roster of theatre legends such as RoseMary Harris, Christopher Plummer, Sir Ian McKellen, Bernadette Peters, James Earl Jones, John Lithgow, Stockard Channing, Glenn Close, Bebe Neuwirth, Cherry Jones, Mary-Louise Parker, Liam Neeson, Harvey Fierstein, Norbert Leo Butz and Christine Ebersole, among others.

The Drama Leaguewas founded in 1916 as an association of theatre professionals and patrons dedicated to encouraging the finest in professional theatre, and has since developed into the theatre's premiere service organization.

The Drama League provides an unparalleled training program for emerging theatre artists through The Directors Project, which encourages and trains young talents while providing much-needed exposure and essential connections to the professional theatrical community.
