WHAT: Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich and former LA Phil Resident Conductor Lionel Bringuier and superstar pianist Yuja Wang reunite with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall for three performances, Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21, at 8 pm, and Sunday, November 22, at 2 pm. The two performed together with the LA Phil earlier this year when they opened the classical season of the Hollywood Bowl. Also on the program are the voices of the Los Angeles Master Chorale for the U.S. premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonen's Karawane. The program opens with Bringuier leading the orchestra in Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, the composer's quiet revolutionary masterpiece. Following the Debussy, Wang takes the stage for Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9, K. 271. The concerts mark Wang's first performances of works by Mozart; the composer is one of several she is exploring as part of a season that finds her expanding her musical horizons. The program closes with Salonen's Karawane, featuring the Los Angeles Master Chorale. The new work from the LA Phil's Conductor Laureate had its world premiere under the direction of Bringuier to inaugurate the French conductor's first season as the Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich French conductor Lionel Bringuier's artistic maturity and interpretative depth have made him a mainstay with the world's foremost orchestras and led to his being named Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich in 2012 at age 26. Now embarking on his second season at the Tonhalle, his artistic vision and energy - both on and off the podium - are helping to usher the orchestra into a new era. Since first coming to attention worldwide in 2005 when he was unanimously awarded first prize and the Prix du Public at the 49th Besancon Young Conductors Competition, Bringuier has appeared as a guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and Israel Philharmonic, among others. Bringuier's leadership of the Tonhalle is built on the principles of celebrating the orchestra's rich history while also expanding its repertoire through the performance of new and lesser-known works, strengthening a commitment to community engagement and accessibility, and extending its reach internationally through touring and media projects. A key initiative in his inaugural season was the establishment of a new position: Creative Chair, held in 2015/16 by composer Jörg Widmann. The 2015/16 season sees Bringuier and the orchestra embark on an extensive European tour and conclude their "Ravel Cycle," a survey of the composer's complete orchestral works, which is being recorded for release on Deutsche Grammophon. Beyond Zurich, Bringuier makes debuts over the next year with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Barcelona Symphony, and Rome's Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and returns to the Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, and Alma Chamber Orchestra. A pianist who radiates palpable magnetism and a distinctly contemporary sensibility, Yuja Wang is an astounding artist whose awe-inspiring technique is matched only by her eloquence as a musician. Since her breakthrough debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2007 while still a student at the Curtis Institute of Music, she has established herself as an international sensation and a fixture among the world's leading orchestras-including those of New York, London, Amsterdam, and Berlin-regularly joining them on tours of the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Championed early on by preeminent maestros including Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Tilson Thomas, and the late Claudio Abbado, she is one of today's most sought after soloists, as well as a fiercely dedicated chamber musician, recitalist, and Grammy-nominated recording artist. To launch the 2015/16 season, Wang joined Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony on their "European Festivals Tour," performing Beethoven and Bartók at London's BBC Proms, the Edinburgh, Rheingau, Lucerne, and Enescu festivals, and in Amsterdam, Luxembourg, and Paris. She plays Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony with the New York Philharmonic under Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra under Dudamel, both in Caracas and throughout Europe. Mozart's Concerto No. 9 is on the program for her debut with the Vienna Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, as well as for appearances with the New York and Israel Philharmonics led by Charles Dutoit and Zubin Mehta. A U.S. tour with Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Symphony showcases both the Mozart and Tchaikovsky's Second Concerto, the latter of which she reprises with the Moscow Philharmonic and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, in Amsterdam and Asia. In recital, Wang tours the U.S., France, Holland and Germany. Giving a voice to Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Grammy-nominated Los Angeles Master Choraleis led by Artistic Director Grant Gershon. Proclaimed "the nation's most pioneering major chorus" (Los Angeles Times), it has also been hailed as "inspired" (The New York Times), "magnificent" (Chicago Tribune) and "a superb vocal ensemble" (The New York Observer). The Chorale is currently in its 52nd season as a resident company of The Music Center of Los Angeles County and its 13th as the resident chorus at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Presenting its own concert series each season, it performs choral music from the earliest writings to the most recent contemporary compositions. The Chorale has performed in more than 500 concerts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at both Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, and has toured with the orchestra to Europe and New York City. It has also appeared at the Ojai Music Festival, the Great Performers series at Lincoln Center, the Ravinia Festival and the Overture Center in Madison, Wisconsin, as well as in leading venues throughout the Southland.
