Lawrence Public Library Hosts Free Acting Workshop & Illiad Performance 4/28

The cover of KU Classics professor Stanley Lombardo's acclaimed translation of Homer's
Iliad features a photograph of the D-day landings at Normandy entitled "Into the Jaws of Death." It was this photo that inspired Aquila Theatre's groundbreaking production of The Iliad: Book One. With its World War II setting and Lombardo's vernacular English translation, the New York Times hailed the production as "a performance of staggering power...a stunning, stirring, and memorable theatrical experience."

Page and Stage: The Power of the Iliad Today, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, is a joint project of Aquila Theatre, the American Philological Association, the Urban Libraries Council and New York University's Center for Ancient Studies. The project brings events to libraries that are designed to inspire people to come together to read, see, and think about classical literature and how it continues to influence and invigorate American cultural life.
