The Las Vegas Philharmonic presents Cabrera Conducts Dvorák on Saturday, February 4th at 7:30 p.m. in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center. Music Director Donato Cabrera and Composer Nathaniel Stookey will host a pre-concert conversation at 6:30 p.m. for patrons to learn more about the history and meaning behind the music and the unique instrument that will be featured in the evening's program.
The program begins with the West Coast premiere of the overture, Nhanderú, composed by Grammy nominated Brazilian-American composer, pianist and vocalist Clarice Assad. Nhanderú pronounced (/nyuh.dey.roo/) means "God" in Tupi-Guarani, a language spoken by a group of indigenous people living in areas of the Amazon basin. The music represents the Natives from the Tupi-Guarani tribes practicing a rain dance through prayer, summoning spirits of the land as well as their ancestors to bring in the rain to ensure soil fertility, abundant harvest and to frighten away the spirits of the lost world.
Next, the orchestra performs a world premiere arrangement of Nathaniel Stookey's YTTE (Yield to Total Elation) featuring the "OOVE," a musical instrument engineered by San Francisco-based designer, Oliver DiCicco. "YTTE" is the name of an elaborate imaginary city created by San Francisco "outsider" artist and architectural draftsman, A.G. Rizzoli, from the mid-1930s. Stookey came across the imaginary city in a newspaper article and was inspired to compose music to YTTE. The work features an electro-acoustic stringed instrument called the OOVE, which provides the harmonic background to the piece.
The Philharmonic concludes its performance with Dvorák's Symphony No. 7 in D Minor. The music's dark and dramatic nature sets it apart from his Slavonic dance melodies. This deeply intimate work is considered one of Dvorák's finest symphonies.

YOUR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GOES TRIBAL as we celebrate Donato's birthday with the West Coast premiere of Clarice Assad's overture, Nhanderú, a musical portrait of an Amazon basin ritual that focuses on faith, prayer, and gratitude. Nathaniel Stookey's orchestral version of YTTE (Yield to Total Elation), a piece inspired by the story of A.G. Rizzoli, a humble draftsman who created elaborate designs for a vast imaginary city, receives its world premiere. Finally, one of Donato's favorite pieces, Antonin Dvo?ák's Symphony No. 7, creates a fantastic counterpoint as the centerpiece for the second half of this celebratory concert. Known for its dramatic expression and brooding atmosphere, this is perhaps one of Dvo?ák's most personal, self-explorative works.
