The Las Vegas Philharmonic presents a Symphonic Spectacular on Saturday, October 8th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 9th at 2:00 p.m. in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center. Music Director Donato Cabrera will host a pre-concert conversation about the music being performed on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before the scheduled performances.

The orchestra will start the program with Rossini's classic Overture to William Tell from his final opera composed in 1829. The four section overture is based on the legendary tale of a Swiss hero during the fight for independence from the Austrian Hapsburgs in the 14th century. It is best known for its finale featuring a fast-paced trumpet fanfare which has been used in many popular American radio and TV programs including, The Lone Ranger. Next, the orchestra will perform one of Bizet's most beloved works, Suite No. 1 from the opera Carmen, a story about a fatal love between a gypsy woman and a renegade soldier, followed by Saint-Saëns's Bacchanale from the biblical story Samson and Delilah, Opus 47.

Next the Philharmonic performs Suppé's Light Cavalry Overture from a two act operetta that opens with a bugle call and fanfare, followed by the exotic and lyrical orchestrations of Borodin's Polovetsian Dances from Prince Igor. The Symphonic Spectacular performances conclude with Johann Strauss Jr.'s famous waltz, An der schönen blauen Donau (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), Opus 314, which also has been heard in films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, Age of Innocence, Heaven's Gateand True Lies.
