The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Noon to Midnight: A Day of New Music returns Saturday, November 18 at Walt Disney Concert Hall. As it did during last year's successful inaugural performances, the day-long event offers audiences L.A.'s most far-sighted ensembles with pop-up performances scattered throughout the various spaces of the iconic venue.
The day begins at noon with a presentation of Annie Gosfield's operaWar of the Worlds, with concept, direction and text adaption provided by LA Phil Artist-Collaborator Yuval Sharon. Narrated by award-winning actress Sigourney Weaver, the performance piece based on Orson Welles' 1938 radio broadcast will simultaneously be experienced on the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage and outside on the streets of DTLA via three newly reactivated World War II-era air raid sirens. Christopher Rountree leads the LA Phil New Music Group in the performance that will have its world premiere earlier in the week, on Sunday, November 12. The performance repeats at 2pm, providing an opportunity for those who heard either of the earlier inside or outside performances to gain a different perspective.
Later in the day, the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage hosts the LA Phil's National Composer's Intensive with wild Up led by Christopher Rountree, featuring the world premieres of six NCI participants - David Bird, Tonia Ko, Aldo Lombera, Nate May, Erika Vega and Juan Andres Vergara.
Other performances taking place on the stage include Jacaranda Musicwith the world premiere of an LA Phil-commissioned work by Mark Gray;gnarwhallaby performing two world premieres; red fish blue fish, ledby Steven Schick; a second performance by wild Up, led by Rountreefeaturing two world premieres; and Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestraperforming three world premieres.
In Walt Disney Concert Hall's BP Hall, guests will get to enjoy a performance by HOCKET Duo, a Los Angeles-based cutting-edge piano duo who will present a brief program including the world premiere of Nina C. Young's LA Phil-commissioned Typesetter. The Grand Staircase will also be the site of a performance by guitar octet Los Angeles Electric 8.
