The annual Halloween haunt at Walt Disney Concert Hall features one of the most classic horror movies of the 1920's, The Phantom of the Opera, starring Lon Chaney as Erik, the Phantom, in make-up he famously constructed for the role. The projection of the 1925 silent film will be accompanied by a live soundtrack performed by organist Clark Wilson on Halloween, Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 8:00 PM.

Based on the French novel Le fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the 1925 film The Phantom of the Opera (restored in 2003 by Photoplay Productions) tells the haunting tale of a mysterious ghost that haunts the Paris Opera House and its performers. Myth becomes reality when he reveals himself to the young singer Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin). A love triangle ensues between Christine, the masked phantom, and Vicomte Raoul de Chagny (Norman Kerry) who, enraptured by her melodic voice, risks his own life to save Christine from the unyielding power the phantom holds over her.

Accompanying the silent film is organist Clark Wilson, who returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall for the tenth straight year. Wilson is one of the most prominent and recognized scorers of silent photoplays in America today. He works exclusively with the organ in developing accurate and historic musical accompaniments as they were performed in major picture palaces during the heyday of the silent film. Wilson's organ theatrics give a pulse to these silent films, intensifying the suspenseful and chilling twists. Based in Ohio, Wilson is an acclaimed organ technician and consultant. He has earned both the ATOS Organist of the Year award and the ATOS Technician of Merit award - the only person to receive both distinctions.

An Upbeat Live pre-concert event will take place in BP Hall at 7:00 PM and is free of charge to all ticket holders. Alan Chapman, KUSC-FM radio host, composer-lyricist and pianist, hosts. The Halloween celebration is set for Thursday, October 31, 2013 at 8:00 PM at the Walt Disney CONCERT HALL, 111 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles

The Walt Disney Concert Hall organ was inaugurated in 2004 at the opening of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's second season in the new Hall. Designed by Frank Gehry and Manuel Rosales of Rosales Organ Builders, the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ contains pipes ranging in size from a pencil to a telephone pole, and is voiced with a wide dynamic range from pianississimo to a breathtaking fortissimo. The specially curved wood façade pipes were made by Glatter-Götz Orgelbau of solid, vertical grain Douglas fir and consist of the Violone and Bassoon basses. Behind the façade are three levels of pipes, including metal pipes made of tin and lead alloys and wood pipes made of Norwegian pine.
