(New York, October 16)- In a rare New York appearance, the virtuoso Indian vocalist Kaushiki Chakrabarty performs a lyrical program displaying the exquisitely rich vocal traditions of South and North India at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Friday, November 14.
Masters of Indian Music: Kaushiki Chakrabarty is a special one-night-only performance presented in conjunction with the exhibition Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection. Complementing the exhibition's dazzling jeweled objects from the private collection of Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani, Chakrabarty performs with her signature musicality and expression. The daughter of renowned Indian singers Chandana Chakraborty and Ajoy Chakraborty, she ranks among the leading new South Asian vocalists.
The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Metropolitan Museum's Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium. Tickets start at $40.
Also presented alongside the exhibition, in January 2015, Surupa Sen and Bijayini Satpathy, the principal dancers of India's world-renowned Nrityagram dance troupe, will perform the New York premiere of Samyoga ("conjunction of two heavenly bodies"), a program of solos and duets set to an original live score composed by Pandit Raghunath Panigrahi. These performances take place on January 10 at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing and are free with Museum admission.
These performances are presented in collaboration with the World Music Institute.
The exhibition Treasures from India: Jewels from the Al-Thani Collection is on view October 28, 2014 -January 25, 2015. The exhibition is made possible by Cartier.
