Houston Symphony and David D'or to Recognize Israel at 65 Years in 5/23 Concert

On May 23, the Houston Symphony, in partnership with the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston, will present a concert at Jones Hall recognizing the 65th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel. Led by Israeli conductor David Sebba, the acclaimed Israeli singer David D'or will join the Symphony for an evening of pop, classical and traditional Jewish music representative of the cultural richness of Israel.

Known for his four octave range, D'or has thrilled audiences around the world with his ability to effortlessly sing many styles of music.

"In its short 65-year history, Israel has produced innovative technology and made significant strides in every field, including the arts. By showcasing world-renowned singer David D'Or, the entire Houston community will have the opportunity to experience the impressive talent that thrives in Israel. This concert will be a celebration of all its accomplishments."

David Sebba received his Master of Music in composition and singing from Tel Aviv University's Rubin Academy of Music. He currently serves as the Director of the Meitar Opera Studio, a program for young artists at The New Israeli Opera. His other posts include conductor in residence of the Raanana Symphonette Orchestra, the director of the Opera class at The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and music director of three choirs.

Sebba regularly conducts most of Israel's orchestras, including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He works regularly with The New Israeli Opera as a conductor, translator, singer and accompanist. Internationally, he has conducted in Italy, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan and participates in concerts and festivals around the world, as well as in television and radio recordings.

David D'or is blessed with a beautiful and unique voice. Using his four octave range, he can easily reach the high notes of a contra-tenor and then drop to the depths of a baritone. International audiences and critics alike regard him as one of the leading Israeli musicians of his generation. Newspapers such as the Washington Post, Beijing Daily, Italy's La Repubblica, BBC News, together with Israel's major newspapers, Yediot Aharonot and Ma'ariv, have praised D'or.

D'or is a graduate of The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and is a chosen artist of the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation. A winner of 10 Gold and Platinum albums, D'or writes and composes most of his songs and harmoniously integrates elements of classical, Jewish and world music into his albums. His music has led him to perform in the presence of many world leaders including Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI, President Bill Clinton, the King of Thailand, the King of Sweden, the King of Taiwan, the Italian president Napolitano, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Israeli president Shimon Peres and more. In 2010, the Italian government elected him to the prestigious Order of the Arts and Letters.

During the 2013-14 Season, the Houston Symphony will be in its 100th year as one of America's leading orchestras with a full complement of concert, community, education, touring and recording activities. The Houston Symphony is one of the oldest performing arts organizations in Texas whose inaugural performance was held at The Majestic Theater in downtown Houston on June 21, 1913. Today, with an annual operating budget of $28.7 million, the full-time ensemble of 87 professional musicians is the largest performing arts organization in Houston, presenting more than 280 concerts for 280,000 people, including 84,000 children, annually.
