Ebene Quartet Appear At University Auditorium On 3/22

Widely acclaimed, dynamic, virtuosic and electrifying are just a few of the words that have been used to describe the four talented musicians of Ebène Quartet. On Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m., the quartet will demonstrate the breadth of their talents with their first Gainesville appearance at University Auditorium.

The meteoric rise of France's Ebène Quartet has been distinguished by its youth, open-mindedness, and versatility, displaying equal facility in the classical repertoire and contemporary music, France's Ebène Quartet has had a meteoric rise to the top. Now among the most sought-after quartets worldwide for its classical programs, the Quartet equally amazes audiences with its virtuosic jazz performances.

Considered one of the finest quartets of its generation, the Quartet made its U.S. debut tour in March 2009, featuring performances in Boston, Seattle, Washington, D.C., and at Carnegie Hall. Its 2008-2009 season included the participation in a Haydn cycle at London's Wigmore Hall, with the Emerson, Hagen, and Arcanto Quartets. The Ebène will also celebrate the Haydn Year at Brussel's Palais des Beaux-Arts, and will perform in other notable venues including the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, Zurich's Tonhalle, Vienna's Musikverein, the City of London Festival, and Gstaad's Menuhin Festival.

Fall 2008 saw the Quartet's first release on the Virgin Classics label: a Ravel, Debussy, and Fauré recording that was named Gramophone's December 2008 Editor's Choice and that made the Recordings of the Year lists of both The New Yorker and The Denver Post received five-star ratings from both the BBC Music Magazine and London's Sunday Times. The Ebène Quartet's live Haydn CD, Mirare, Harmonia Mundi, was released in February 2006 to unanimous worldwide praise, including a selection of Album of the Month by The Strad. Additionally, the Quartet released a Bartok CD in February 2007.

Considered one of the finest quartets of its generation, the Quartet has been nominated for the renowned Les Victoires de la Musique Classique Chamber Music Ensemble of the Year for 2009, and is also a nominee for BBC Music Magazine's Newcomer of the Year Award. In June 2006 the Ebène Quartet was admitted to the BBC New Generation Artists Scheme. In 2004 the Quartet was awarded the First Prize of the prestigious ARD Competition in Munich, as well as the Audience Prize, two prizes for the best interpretation, and the Karl Klinger Foundation Prize.
