The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, a founding resident company of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, opens their celebratory 50th Anniversary Season with three beloved works in the classical repertoire, Verdi La traviata, Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6. The soloist on the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto is the winner of the 2009 Van Cliburn competition, Ms. Di Wu, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. Di Wu Plays Mendelssohn takes place at 2:30 pm, this Sunday September 14 and 7:30 pm and Monday September 15 in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater. The Sunday matinee performance will be followed by "Classical Conversations," a brief question-and-answer session with Ms. Wu and Music Director Dirk Brossé.
Verdi's La traviata is full with the dramatic intensity and rich lyricism that marked the masterpiece operas of his extremely popular middle period. Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2 features exciting contrasts that make it a thrilling challenge for any soloist. The outer movements are defined by his extremely fast tempo markings while the middle movement shows powerful emotion and Chopin-like piano ornamentations. Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, also known as the "Pastorale," with its broad and sustained musical paragraphs, paints vivid images of the German countryside.
