Daniele Rustioni leads the Opéra National de Lyon's 2018 Festival in three operas by Giuseppe Verdi, March 16 through April 6, 2018. In celebration of Rustioni's first season at the Opéra de Lyon's principal conductor, Opéra de Lyon has dedicated its annual festival to the works of Verdi, which have played an essential role in Rustioni's career. The 2018 Festival explores themes of power, politics, corruption, and hope with three of Verdi's less-often performed operas: Macbeth, the 1867 Paris Version of Don Carlos sung in the original French, and Attila. Rustioni will conduct the Opéra de Lyon Orchestra and Chorus in all the festival performances.
The festival begins on March 16 with a revival of Ivo van Hove's production of Verdi's Macbeth, which premiered at Opéra de Lyon in 2012. Baritione Elchin Azizov sings the title role with soprano Susanna Branchini as Lady Macbeth, bass Roberto Scandiuzzi as Banco, and tenor Arseny Yakovlev as Macduff. The following evening, March 17, Rustioni conducts the premiere of Christophe Honoré's new production of the 1867 Paris version of Verdi's Don Carlos sung in the original French by an impressive international cast, including Sergey Ramonvsky as Carlos, Michele Pertusi as Philippe II, Stéphane Degout as Rodrigue, Sally Matthews as Elisabeth de Valois, Eve-Maud Hubeaux as Princess Eboli, and Roberto Scandiuzzi as The Grand Inquisitor. On March 18, Rustioni conducts a one-night-only concert version of Verdi's 1846 Attila, a co-production with the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, starring Dmitry Ulyanov in the title role, Tatiana Serjan as Odabella, Alexey Markov as Ezio, and Riccardo Massi as Foresto. In the course of three weeks, Rustioni will conduct all 16 performances of these three remarkable scores.
In October 2017, Daniele Rustioni inaugurated his tenure as Opéra de Lyon's new Principal Conductor leading an innovative new staging of Britten's War Requiem directed by Yoshi Oida. Internationally, Rustioni has been engaged by many of the world's major opera houses including Bayerischer Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro La Fenice, Royal Opera House (London), Opéra Bastille, Opernhaus Zürich, Stuttgart, Teatro Regio Torino, and the Bolshoi Theatre. In April 2017 he made his critically acclaimed debut at the Metropolitan Opera conducting Verdi's Aida, and was immediately invited back for future engagements. In addition to his position with Opéra de Lyon, Rustioni has been the Music Director of the Orchestra della Toscana since 2014, which he will lead on a 5-city Italian tour in May 2018. Also that month Maestro Rustioni returns to the Barbican Centre to conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a program of works by Ravel, Respighi, Federico Ghedini and Mohammed Fairouz.
