The Cleveland Orchestra announces PORCHestra, an afternoon of music on Lakewood's front porches sponsored by Charter One. The community-wide event takes place on Sunday, May 18, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 pm., followed by a special community performances at the Lakewood Public Library.
Lakewood residents are encouraged to register their porch at www.clevelandorchestra.com/lakewood. Each participating registrant will receive two free tickets to a Cleveland Orchestra concert at this summer's Blossom Music Festival. Participating porches will be part of a Google map indicating the "musical" porches and neighborhood performances. In addition, Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra musicians are performing on various front porches.
"At Charter One, we believe in giving back to the communities where we live and work," said Joseph D. DiRocco, president of Charter One and RBS Citizens in Ohio. "The City of Lakewood has been a partner in our Charter One Growing Communities initiative to promote neighborhood revitalization in the Birdtown neighborhood. Now, we're proud to support The Cleveland Orchestra at Home in Lakewood. The PORCHestra event will be a great opportunity for neighbors to come together to make and enjoy music throughout the city."
"We are delighted to be partnering with the Lakewood community for this neighborhood residency," commented Gary Hanson, executive director of The Cleveland Orchestra. "Throughout the week of May 17 to 24, performances and activities are being presented throughout Lakewood that showcase the power of music to inspire people and to bring people together. We are grateful to Charter One for sponsoring the PORCHestra on May 18. We look forward to seeing and hearing many Lakewood citizens playing music together on their porches."
The afternoon of music making will culminate with an outdoor concert on the front porch of the downtown Lakewood Public Library at 5:15 p.m. with performances by the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus Chamber Ensemble, followed at 6:00 p.m. by members of The Cleveland Orchestra performing double-bass quartets and violin/viola duets.
In the weeks prior to the PORCHestra events, volunteers from the Orchestra, Charter One, and the community are renovating two front porches in partnership with LakewoodAlive.
