The Chelsea Symphony continues its eleventh season, Flight Paths, on Friday, April 21, at 8:30 PM and Saturday, April 22, at 7:30 PM at St. Paul's German Lutheran Church, 315 West 22nd Street. Both concerts feature a pair of 20th century classics that draw inspiration from the past: Stravinsky's "Dumbarton Oaks" is a sparkling showpiece for chamber orchestra that alludes to Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and is the final work the composer wrote in Europe before immigrating to the United States. Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony is a witty homage to the symphonic idiom of Haydn and Mozart. TCS Composer in Residence Aaron Dai hears the world premiere of his Early Morning Walk, based on a poem by US Poet Laureate Ted Hooser.
Friday's concert showcases the world premiere of Concerto fantastique written by Samuel Magrill for his daughter, flutist Mira Magrill, paying tribute to the rich tradition of flute music by French composers. Violinist Stephen
McDougall Graham also solos on Friday with the Fifth Violin Concerto by Henri Vieuxtemps. Saturday's concert features another beloved staple of solo violin literature, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, welcoming Jenn Ahn back as a TCS soloist. Tickets are available now on Eventbrite.
Flight Paths features music written by composers who have visited or immigrated to the United States of America. This season celebrates the diversity of musicians who have been inspired by, and made their mark on, this land we call home.
More information can be found on our website or follow the link to Eventbrite for advanced purchase tickets for both concerts for $25 unassigned seats in premium reserved areas. General admission tickets are also available at the door for a suggested $20 donation.
We look forward to seeing you for this special concert series on April 21 and 22!
