Canton Youth Symphonies Select Students for Lindsay Deutsch Masterclass

CANTON, OHIO (April 19, 2016) -Members of the Canton Youth Symphonies (CYS) recently auditioned for a Masterclass with violinist Lindsay Deutsch. The Masterclass will be held Saturday April 30 at the Zimmermann Symphony in Canton as part of a weekend-long residency with Ms. Deutsch. The residency with Ms. Deutsch is included in the Classics Alive Foundation Youth Symphony of the Year award that Canton Youth Symphonies received in the fall of 2015.

Four local violin students, were selected to participate in the Masterclass by CYS Music Director and Conductor, Dr. Rachel Waddell and Vivek Jayaraman, concertmaster of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. They are: Katerina Wuchnick, a 5th grader at Lake Center Christian School; Julia Cheatham, an 8th grader at the Arts Academy at Summit; Karl Helmuth, a 7th grader at North Canton Middle School; Michelle Sayre, an 11th grader at North Canton Hoover High School. Each student will perform a piece for Ms. Deutsch who will then offer feedback on the performance.

American violinist, Lindsay Deutsch, has emerged as a charismatic and captivating presence on today's music scene. Her Project CLASSIFIED is gaining significant attention with classical music and targets the most recent generations of Americans with a mixture of classical and crossover music in familiar settings. She frequently appears as guest soloist with American and Canadian orchestras. In 2007, Ms. Deutsch and her sister, Lauren, co-founded the Classics Alive Foundation dedicated to building classical music audiences. The Youth Orchestra Residency Program is now in its 4th year.

Following the masterclass, Ms. Deutsch will present two seminars which are open to the public. The first topic will be Practice Techniques and begins at 2:30pm. The second, beginning at 3:00pm will be on the topic of Careers in Music. Both seminars will be held at the Zimmermann Symphony Center (2331 17th Street NW in Canton) and are free.

Her residency will close with a performance with the Canton Youth Symphonies on May 1 at 4:00pm in Umstattd Performing Arts Hall.

Founded in 1962, the Canton Youth Symphonies offer aspiring young musicians a professional learning environment focused on the highest artistic standards. Its participants rehearse weekly in preparation for three concerts annually, and students have the opportunity to work closely with Canton Symphony Orchestra musicians and guest artists. There is no minimum age requirement for CYS. Membership in CYS is by audition only.
