Renowned Jazz Pianist Don Irwin was only 6 when he started playing piano. By 14, he was playing with Willie Nelson.

"I remember asking my mom for a piano for Christmas when I was 6 years old," Irwin said, which he received. "I could sit down at the piano with the radio on and play along to most things on the radio. I was scolded because my teacher found out I wasn't reading the music." Soon after, Irwin began playing at church and has been performing ever since.

Irwin comes to Canton on September 22 as an addition to Canton Symphony Orchestra's Pops Series. Irwin's program includes contemporary renditions of favorites including Downton Abbey, Rhapsody in Blue as well as medleys from Andrew Lloyd Weber, Henry Mancini, Patsy Cline, and the Beatles.

Despite his classical training, Don Irwin's repertoire is mainly jazz, Broadway, rock and popular hits. He studied Piano Performance and received a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Illinois. Besides Nelson, he has played as a recording studio musician for other artists, including Prince and Donna Summer. In 1998, he was officially welcomed by Steinway & Sons and named a "Steinway Artist."
Irwin's own works have become known around the world. His music is uniquely fused with varying blends and textures acquired through his travels and experiences in diverse world cultures. His beautiful melodies, sweeping ranges, unique sounds, and exotic rhythms are intertwined to form what has become the Don Irwin Signature Sound.

The concert is at Cable Recital Hall (in the Cultural Center for the Arts, 1001 Market AvE. North), starting at 3pm. Tickets for the concert are $25 and available atwww.CantonSymphony.org, at the Canton Symphony Box Office located in the Cultural Center for the Arts or by calling 330-452-2094. The Box Office is open weekdays 10am to 2pm. Tickets will also be available by walk-up at the concert. All seating for the concert is General Admission. Some concerts do sell out in advance.

Founded in 1937, the Canton Symphony Orchestra is a fully professional ensemble and organization dedicated to performing concerts that enrich, educate and entertain. Under the direction of Gerhardt Zimmermann, the orchestra performs classical, pops, holiday, and educational programs. Most performances are in Umstattd Performing Arts Hall, 2323 17th Street NW, Canton, Ohio (at McKinley High School across from C.T. Branin Natatorium). Parking at McKinley High School is free.
