Ring in the season in a jazz style with concerts Dec. 11 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the College of the Mainland Fine Arts Building Recital Hall.
On Dec. 11 the COM Jazz Combo will present a concert featuring classic and holiday jazz from "Moanin'," a classic Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers selection, to Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay." "Blue Friday" from trumpeter Kenny Dorham will have some earthy improvisations.
Holiday tunes such as the classic "The Christmas Song" better known as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" will get you in the holiday spirit. From a jazzy "Charlie Brown Christmas" to a salsa version of "Feliz Navidad," enjoy new takes on holiday staples.
On Dec. 16 the COM Jazz Ensemble will continue the theme with
Dizzy Gillespie's "Birk's Works" and
Dave Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a la Turk." Plus, "White Christmas," "It Came Upon a Midnight's Dream" and a
Glenn Miller version of "Jingle Bells" will ring in the holiday season.
"Come jazz up your Christmas spirit with these two concerts," said Sparky Koerner, director of both groups.
