Barrington Stage Company's Musical Theatre Lab, under the mentorship of Tony winning composer/lyricist William Finn, continues its fourth season, with The Longing and Short of It - Songs by Daniel Mate; as part of the theater's 15th Anniversary Season. Christopher D. Littlefield is music director, with direction by William Finn.
The revue stars Daniel Maté,
Marie-France Arcilla (Old Globe's new production of Working), BSC veteran
Heath Calvert (B'way's Good Vibrations), bassist Carl Oman, percussionist Josh Samuels, and Jason "SweetTooth" Williams (
CAP 21's The Trouble with Doug). Maté's songs are a combination of classical music, jazz and rock made thrilling by his unique voice, at once heartfelt and humorous. He makes dazzlingly audacious choices that are always surprising yet inevitable.
Daniel Mate (MFA, NYU '07) wrote lyrics and co-wrote the book (with Will Aronson) for The Trouble with Doug, a Kafka-inspired musical that premiered recently at New York's
CAP 21 Studios. His songs have been performed in New York at Joe's Pub,
The Duplex, and as part of the York Theatre's 4th NEO ("New, Emerging,Outstanding") Concert in 2008. His sold-out cabaret Marry Me, America was a Time Out New York "Critics' Pick." Daniel also teaches songwriting to young people and runs a custom-songwriting service. Look for
