The Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras (BSYO) will perform their season finale concert on May 17, 2014 at 3 p.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The program will feature works by Mozart, Nielsen, Mussorgsky, Brahms, Prokofiev, Beethoven and many others and will highlight three orchestral ensembles comprised of 205 of the Mid-Atlantic Region's most talented musicians, grades 1-12. Featured soloists include BSYO flutist Handong Park, 2014 BSYO Concerto Competition winner, performing Carl Nielsen's Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. The program will also feature violinist Katharina Kang and violist Michael Casimir, guests from the Heifetz International Music Institute, performing Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra in E-flat Major.
Students in the BSYO, a cornerstone of the BSO's extensive education outreach, commit to weekly rehearsals and have opportunities to collaborate with and be mentored by BSO musicians and Maestra Marin Alsop, including side-by-side rehearsals with the BSO, coaching from BSO musicians, master classes with world renowned artists, intensive chamber music classes and performance opportunities, and access to exclusive BSYO events at the Meyerhoff. The BSYO serves as ensemble-in-residence at the state-of-the-art George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson, Maryland.
