Student musicians from the Atlanta area, including members of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO) and Talent Development Program (TDP), will perform a Side-By-Side Concert with members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta Symphony Hall at the Woodruff Arts Center. Staff Conductor Jere Flint will lead the musicians in a program featuring the Prelude to Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 1, and selections from Stravinsky's The Firebird and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, among others.

Justin Blalock - the starting left guard for the Atlanta Falcons - has been an advocate for the ASO and its music education efforts throughout the past year, and he will perform on tuba alongside the Orchestra members and student musicians at this year's concert. Mr. Blalock, who grew up playing the tuba and continues to play the drums and guitar, recognizes the importance of music-rich educational experiences and is also a spokesperson for the Atlanta Symphony's "When I Play Music" campaign for music education (www.aso.org/blalock).

"Growing up in Texas as an athlete and musician, I discovered firsthand that playing both football and tuba helped me thrive in all areas of life. When kids play music, they are more likely to become community leaders, have more confidence, and experience a sense of achievement," said Mr. Blalock. "Music is so important, and my partnership with the Atlanta Symphony has allowed me to help ensure that music education opportunities are available to kids in the Atlanta community and beyond. It's been an incredibly rewarding experience."

The Side-By-Side Concert will mark the end of an intensive four-day orchestral workshop, which allows students to participate in special coaching sessions with Atlanta Symphony musicians, sit next to Orchestra members in rehearsals, and receive nearly 20 hours of musical instruction from Mr. Flint. Additionally, students will be paired with an Atlanta Symphony musician who will serve as their mentor throughout the entire workshop. Approximately 55 student musicians will participate in this year's Side-By-Side program.

The ASYO, which will begin its 39th season in fall 2013, is comprised of gifted young men and women, ages 13-18, from across the Southeast, and is led by Youth Orchestra Music Director Jere Flint.

Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office or by calling 404-733-5000.

A frequent conductor of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concerts, Staff Conductor Jere Flint leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's popular Family Concerts and its Symphony Street concerts for youngsters.

Established in 1974, the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra provides Atlanta's most talented and dedicated students an outlet to perform masterworks. Each year, more than 300 instrumentalists, ages 13-18, audition for one of 120 seats in the orchestra. The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra presents a three concert series each year, and members have exclusive invitations to participate in readings and master classes with the top artists in the instrumental music industry.

Justin Blalock begins his sixth season this year as starting left guard with the Atlanta Falcons. A native of Plano, TX, Justin started 14 games at the left guard position as a rookie in 2007. He started his first career NFL game at Minnesota (9/9) and helped the offense record 265 total yards.

"When I Play Music" Campaign for Music Education: On May 1, 2013, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra launched its third annual "When I Play Music" campaign - a broad-based giving campaign which focuses on supporting the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its education and community programs, and raising awareness of the impact of music- rich educational experiences on students.

The yearly "When I Play Music" campaign is primarily driven by social media, and utilizes online giving to enable audiences to give donations, beginning at just $5, to support the Orchestra's vast education and community engagement programs. A microsite containing additional campaign details is available at aso.org/give5. This year's campaign concluded on May 31, 2013.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), currently in its 68th season, is one of America's leading orchestras. It performs great music, presents leading artists, educates and engages music lovers. The ASO serves as the cornerstone for artistic development and music education in the southeast. It performs more than 200 concerts each year for a combined audience of more than a half million in a full schedule of performances. It also reaches more than 67,000 students and underserved members of the community through its education and community outreach programs.

Tickets are $5 general admission, and are available online at atlantasymphony.org, or by calling 404.733.5000. Tickets may also be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, all ticketmaster outlets, and the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office, located in the Woodruff Arts Center at 15th and Peachtree Streets.
