The All-Star Orchestra, an ensemble comprising top musicians from the best orchestras across the country to perform under Music Director Gerard Schwarz, has received its 10th New York Emmy Award. The New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded the episode "The Pines of Rome, and the Restless Sea," from season five, the Emmy Award in the "Audio - Live / Post Production" category. The father-and-son team of sound engineers Dmitriy and Alexander Lipay are the winners. The announcement was made at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards, which took place on October 26 at the New York Marriott Marquis. The hourlong episode was also nominated in the "Arts/Entertainment (Long-Form Content)" category.
The board of directors extends its heartfelt congratulations to the musicians of the All-Star Orchestra and Maestro Schwarz, and especially to the gifted Lipays. Dmitriy was the recording engineer/editor for the episode; Alexander was the audio producer/mastering mix engineer. "The Pines of Rome, and the Restless Sea" (episode 502) originally aired in July 2023 on WNET, the New York PBS affiliate. The program has been aired nationally via American Public Television since September 2023. It features exhilarating performances of music by Ottorino Respighi and Claude Debussy. The Pines of Rome, Respighi's great orchestral showpiece, unites nature with the history of Rome, "the Eternal City," in thrilling tone pictures, while Debussy's impressionist masterpiece La Mer portrays the ever-changing sea in its many moods and colors.
In 2021, the All-Star Orchestra received its eighth and ninth Emmy awards at the 64th Annual New York Emmy Awards Ceremony. "From Italy and Hungary with Love," a program featuring music by Mendelssohn and Kodaly, won in the "Special Event - Edited" category. That episode also received an Emmy in the "Audio Post-production" category.
The All-Star Orchestra series has been broadcast nationwide on public television since 2013, and previously won Emmy awards in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. The organization recently announced the multifaceted programming for its sixth season, which is currently being aired. It consists of "A Symphonic Organ Spectacular," with music by Saint-Saëns and Carlos Chávez; "Symphonic Metamorphosis," with works by Paul Hindemith, Franz Liszt, and Anton Webern; "Concerto for Orchestra," featuring the masterpiece by Béla Bartók, and Bach; and "Schubert's Immortal Unfinished Symphony," also featuring music by American composers David Diamond and Joan Tower.
Now in its second decade, the All-Star Orchestra gives viewers a front-row seat to the world's greatest music. The series features classical masterpieces and new works from leading contemporary American composers, aiming to expose a broad audience to classical music while keeping the experience accessible.
