A Spanish Play Starring Zoe Caldwell Extends Through 3/4

Due to popular demand, Classic Stage Company, under the leadership of Brian Kulick, Artistic Director and Jessica R. Jenen, Executive Director, has extended the run of the American premiere of Yasmina Reza's A SPANISH PLAY by an additional two weeks through Sunday, March 4. Previews begin Wednesday, January 10, with an official opening scheduled for Thursday, February 1. A SPANISH PLAY features the legendary actress Zoe Caldwell, the winner of four Tony Awards, in her return to the New York stage, joined in the ensemble piece by acclaimed actors Katherine Borowitz, Linda Emond, Denis O'Hare and Larry Pine. Translated by playwright David Ives, A SPANISH PLAY will be directed by John Turturro, the Emmy Award-winning and much-admired stage and film actor and director. A SPANISH PLAY will feature scenic design by Riccardo Hernandez, costumes by Donna Zakowska and lighting by Christopher Akerlind.

Following in the venerable footsteps of Pirandello, Reza's A SPANISH PLAY goes behind the scenes at the rehearsal of a play, where the line between reality and the theater begin to blur. A SPANISH PLAY premiered in Paris at the Theatre de la Madeleine in January, 2004. It has also been performed in several other European countries and in Canada.

Zoe Caldwell has appeared in most of the great companies of the English-speaking world. On Broadway, she has won four Tony Awards for roles in Slapstick, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Medea, and Master Class. She appeared Off-Broadway in Colette, and in Terrence McNally's A Perfect Ganesh. She played Emma Hamilton in Terence Rattigan's Bequest to the Nation in London; Cleopatra opposite Christopher Plummer's Antony in Stratford, Ontario; Long Day's Journey Into Night opposite Jason Robards at the Kennedy Center and BAM; and Lillian Hellman in Lillian on Broadway. Her portrayals on TV include Medea, Sarah Bernhardt, Mme. Arkadina in "The Seagull," and Carlotta Monterey O'Neill in "Eugene O'Neill, A Glory of Ghosts." Miss Caldwell directed An Almost Perfect Person with Colleen Dewhurst and Richard II in Stratford, Ontario; the award-winning Broadway production of Othello starring James Earl Jones and Christopher Plummer; Park Your Car in Harvard Yard starring Jason Robards and Judith Ivey; and the Off-Broadway production of Vita & Virginia starring Vanessa Redgrave and Eileen Atkins.

KATHERINE BOROWITZ has appeared in such films as Illuminata (directed by John Turturro), Romance and Cigarettes, Secret Passage, The Man Who Wasn't There, Qiz Show and Internal Affairs. She has worked extensively on television, guest-starring in such series as "Law and Order" and "Great Performances."

LINDA EMOND has appeared in Yasmina Reza's Life x 3, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, and Tony Kushner's Homebody/Kabul, for she received an Obie Award, the Lucille Lortel Award and a Drama Desk nomination. She made her New York debut at Manhattan Theatre Club in Nine Armenians (Drama Desk nomination) and her Broadway debut in 1776 as Abigail Adams. She has appeared in the premieres of Craig Lucas's The Dying Gaul (Vineyard), Kander and Ebb's Over and Over (Signature), Peter Hedges's Baby Anger (Playwrights Horizons) and A.R. Gurney's Far East (Williamstown) as well as his Ancestral Voices (Lincoln Center) and the American premiere of Shelagh Stephenson's An Experiment With an Air Pump (Manhattan Theatre Club). Television work includes "The Sopranos," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "Third Watch" and "Wonderland." Recent film: City by the Sea, Almost Salinas and A Gentleman's Game.

DENIS O'HARE won the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in Sweet Charity. Larry Pine began his career in 1969 as a caterpillar in Andre Gregory's infamous production of Alice in Wonderland followed by Endgame; The Seagull; and Our Late Night. At the Public Theater, Wilfred Leach directed him in The Mandrake and Taming of the Shrew. He appeared in Talk Radio, and Wallace Shawn's Aunt Dan and Lemon. On Broadway, he was Roy Cohn in Angels in America and Virgil in Bus Stop. Off-Broadway, he has been seen at Primary Stages, The Jewish Repertory Theater and The American Jewish Theater. Regional theatre: Hartford Stage (Light up the Sky and Heartbreak House); Cleveland (Night of the Iguana). YASMINA REZA (Playwright) is a French playwright and novelist, based in Paris, whose works have all been multi-award-winning, critical and popular international successes. Her plays Converstions After A Burial, The Passage of winter, Art, The Unexpected Man, Life x 3 and A Spanish Play have been produced worldwide and translated into 35 languages. Her new play Le Dieu Du Carnage, directed by Jürgen Gosch, will open on December 8th at the Schauspielhaus in Zurich. She translated La Metamorphose (Stephen Berkoff's version of Kafka's Metamorphosis) which was directed by Roman Polanski. He has adapted 11 classic American musicals for City Center's Encores! Series, among them Wonderful Town, The Pajama Game, Strike up the Band, Do Re Mi (all directed by John Rando), The New Moon. He has written many acclaimed pieces for publications such as The New Yorker and The New York Times Magazine.
