In its 14th annual holiday concert the professional chorus, Cantus Columbus, continues its tradition of recounting the Christmas story with classical works today, December 16 at 7:30 pm.
In this year's installment, each of the concert's four major sections is introduced with an art song sung by the guest soloist and concluded with a familiar audience carol. The story is told and the music performed by chorus and instruments, alone or in various combinations. It includes a great variety of musical forms (from folk carol arrangements and instrumental movements to seasonal motets) and historical styles (from the 15th and each subsequent century through the 21st).
The chorus and conductor William J. Bullock are assisted this year by baritone soloist Wade Thomas and a seven-piece instrumental ensemble (piano, flute, clarinet, violin, cello, trumpet and horn).
Subtitled Message of the Season-Music of the Masters, the concert recounts the Christmas story with great music in place of narration. This season's concert includes works by master composers Fauré, Prokofiev, Reger, D'Indy, Berg, Willan, Spohr, and others, as well as arrangements of anonymous tunes and folk carols from Ireland, Denmark, Moravia, France, Germany, England, and America. The audience will especially enjoy singing the carols in the beautiful acoustics of Legacy Hall.
This beautiful holiday tradition is the perfect way to prepare to receive the true message of the season.
