WEST VIRGINIA - Two youths wander the wasteland, the ruins of what once was. In the ashes and mortal wreckage of civilization, to each other they are all that is left of the world. Thus unfolds "Zwarm Book 1: Decisions of an Unread Man" (published by Xlibris), Andrew Eppeldauer post-apocalyptic debut explores the human condition as it is laid bare and harrowed in environs bereft of all hope except that which is mustered from within.

Jimmy and Desirae are sane souls in a world gone mad, daring to hope, to survive and maybe even rebuild what was taken from them by nameless forces beyond their understanding. They are pursued by bloodheads, plague-zombies, cannibals and rogues who have forsaken their humanity in order to thrive in the wastes and so cannot truly be counted amongst those who have survived, those who the bloodheads themselves prey upon.

The survivors find refuge and respite in their memories of the old days, their dreams are poignant keepsakes of things forever lost, sustaining them through the nightmare of their present. They navigate the mountains and caves of West Virginia, expanses intact, unchanged and timeless in contrast to the ravaged cities of man and the violence playing out in the silent landscape. In these grounds unhallowed, bloodshed is both an exorcism and a baptism, for amidst the dark days and relentless plague-fiends, Jimmy and Desirae continue to carry the fire, their odyssey becoming a light that draws in others from the long night.

A human drama takes place before the narrative's stark and bleak backdrop. Eppeldauer shows the impermanence of things taken for granted, the fall of what used to flourish, the smoldering embers after the fire and the struggles of those seeking a new beginning even after all has ended. Shades of "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy and "World War Z" by Max Brooks, Eppeldauer gives his readers, post-apocalypse junkies and aficionados a compelling meditation on Armageddon's aftermath in the pages of "Zwarm Book 1: Decisions of an Unread Man."
