Yuko Sawa Reveals HEAVEN, HELL AND IN BETWEEN

Women have increasingly become more involved in the workforce following World War II. Paid employment of women has shifted from primarily traditional female-oriented jobs to more non-traditional and previously male-oriented careers. Career aspirations for women are influenced by factors such as gender, socioeconomic status, race, education level and parental expectations.

"Heaven, Hell, and in Between" written by author Yuko Sawa tells the story of her life as a Japanese who became a professional career woman but had experienced a life of both heaven and hell. This book describes to readers the difference between the United States and Japan from mid-1950s onward, conveys the roads the author has taken (and not taken) to become a professional career woman, conveys how she thought that she never really achieved the ambition to get to the top and how her personal relationship have been affected because of this.

This book covers compelling stories about her Japanese heritage, her growing up years both in Japan and the US, her education in San Francisco and New York, those part-time teaching jobs, her employment in some multinational advertising agencies, her love life as well as her wedded life, the difficult times, her involvement in expanding direct-response advertising and marketing of an American insurance company in various Asian countries, the pressure, stress and frustrations of her job, financial predicaments, health problems, until her eventual retirement.

The author and her husband's financial difficulties led her to work some more in network marketing and stock trading. But all the money she had went down the drain, with the loss of stock values and some mutual funds, which her husband had also bought. Their hardship continued. But later on, she reaps the benefit of a private pension insurance she had joined when she was about 30 years old.

However, the author dare not go to her estranged sister's house anymore. Her sister holds the author responsible for her hardship, claiming she had to look after their mother. She made it clear that she certainly does not look forward to seeing her. She interprets her as the "negative force" in her life.

"Heaven, Hell, and in Between" takes readers on an autobiography from the perspective of a Japanese growing up in the West to become a professional career woman. The author weaves cultural, historical and economic events that have affected so many lives around the world.

About the Author

Yuko Sawa left Yokohama, Japan, at age seven. She grew up in New York City and San Francisco. She was back in Japan after high school. After college, she joined McCann Erickson Hakuhodo, a major advertising agency in Tokyo and went on to Budweiser Japan and Bates Japan, a smaller advertising agency. Later, she became a day trader. She lives in Tokyo with her husband.
