Storytelling is a priceless gift that uses the medium of language, be it in the written or spoken form, to create tales imbued with the power of imagination, which convey thoughts and emotions to influence the hearts and minds of others. Despite the importance of this ability, authors Velma and Mark Weaver have discovered a shortage of books that inspire children to write creatively or factually on a specific subject, and thus, they have taken it upon themselves to help their young readers in developing their storytelling talents with their new book, Starters: Book One.

This book has been written to encourage the students to explore the depths of their imagination and that, by using the various stimulus materials and the story Starters, the students will find enjoyment in creating their own anecdotes. The contents are designed in the hope that it will foster an interest in the use of the Internet for researching the problems facing earth, for exploring the lives, events, challenges and achievements of those on the forefront of saving our planet, as well as all living creatures, and that the writing, together with the reporting of their findings, will engender in the young, a desire to emulate the lives of these dedicated people.

The work also addresses world problems, and asks readers to research and find answers to issues such as global warming, pollution, and ecological decimation. Through Starters, the authors seek to cultivate within their readers a love of creativity and a desire to improve the health of the world and the lives of those who inhabit it.

About the Author

Mark and Velma Weaver live in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. Velma, a teacher with 45+ years' experience, has written this book, with the invaluable help of her husband, Mark.

Velma taught for 28 years at the Rockhampton Girls' Grammar School, 10 years of which were spent teaching Years 3 - 7 inclusive, in a one teacher situation, with a class size of up to 30 pupils. The next 18 years were with students Years 8 - 12 in the Secondary School, which resulted in Velma's becoming a Head of Department.

It was with the Primary children that Velma enjoyed and encouraged Creative Writing as a means of developing and extending the ability of the child to express thoughts in written form. This resulted in their producing booklets of poetry and prose which the pupils illustrated and sold within the School community to raise funds for the needy.

A series of Transient Ischaemic Attacks however forced Velma's immediate retirement from class teaching and brought about a change of direction, when with the help of her husband, Mark, their Doctor suggested they assist children who were experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Starters Book 1, has been produced to help all who experience problems in their writing by providing colourful illustrations, ideas, questions, vocabulary and above all "STARTING" paragraphs to overcome the 'how to begin' obstacle which seems to block so many young talented writers.
