The world is your oyster when you're a young boy, especially if you have a dog to share adventures with. It's a good thing he's got a great dog because life can be hard and lonely living on a small farm in the country with three older sisters. His heartwarming story is told in a new book, released by Dog Ear Publishing, Ricky feels lonely sometimes and wanders to the nearby junkyard and woods. But when one of his sisters brings home a surprise, he falls in love. It's no wonder because the puppy with golden fur and big white paws is the cutest thing ever. Soon the boy and the fast-growing dog are the best of friends and begin exploring the land around them.
Having an active imagination is good, but sometimes it makes Ricky think he sees ghosts and monsters. Luckily, he's got Shep to take care of him and chase the ghosts – real or imagined – away. Life on a farm means lots of chores, and it's during a chore gone wrong that Ricky must put new found knowledge to use to save the day. Before too long, his puppy is all grown up. An unexpected accident with Shep means Ricky must grow up as well.
In "My Dog Shep," author Rocco Polito draws on his own upbringing, which lends an authentic note to the story. He shares lessons about the benefits of studying and working hard, as well as being thankful for life's blessings no matter how long they may last. His greatest lesson is the importance of love for family.
Rocco Polito works as a cardiovascular perfusionist for the University of Michigan Health Systems, running the heart-lung machine life support systems and artificial heart devices at the adult and children's hospitals. He earned a bachelor's degree from Marietta College and earned a post-baccaulareate degree in cardiovascular perfusion in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He and his wife live in Michigan. He says if he listens closely enough, he can still hear the echoes of Shep's bark when he visits the old barn, junkyard and woods in the rural area in northeastern Ohio where he grew up.
