FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Theodore Roosevelt was a many-sided president known for his exuberant personality. In a new biography (published by Xlibris), author Margaret Porter Griffin describes how he developed into an accomplished naturalist - as a boy.

"The Amazing Bird Collection of Young Mr. Roosevelt" follows Theodore from his eighth to eighteenth birthdays. His education almost never took place in a traditional classroom, and his relationship with family and friends in the Victorian Age had a deep impact on the man he was to be. Despite frail health, he was devoted to the fresh air, trees and birds at country homes where they spent the summers. One result of his nature self-study was a large collection of birds he stuffed himself, and which can be seen today at the Smithsonian Institution and American Museum of Natural History.

The book is for teens and grownups alike. The author, a former intermediate grade teacher, shares stories from research at Harvard University and other historical sites, with an eye on what Theodore read, wrote, and shared with others. Especially notable are his journal entries from two year-long tours of Europe before he was 15. Readers will identify with this curious, precocious boy's zest for life contagious to those around him, and evident to generations of Americans since.
