A story that dispels the negative belief about people in bondage has come to life as author Wylanda James pens her new book "Beyond the day of Freedom". This is a book of revelation of the inherent strength of a slave, his experiences, the struggles and the triumphs endured as he journeys to reclaim a denied heritage. A story of a pinecone and a promise awaits readers when they read through this book's thrilling pages.
The daring plot follows the clever manipulative adventures, struggles and triumphs of the main character, Mechach, as he travels through forbidden terrains gaining power and fortune while assimilating amidst the whites as one of their own during the 1800s Civil War period in the Southern United States. Posing as Sam Freedman, an astute well-mannered southern gentleman, he blends easily among them using the social graces and decorum taught to him by his master's daughter, Saard. He reclaims their love child, redeems the pinecone he gave to his mother when she was sold away from him, marries his beloved wife, Mattie, and executes covert maneuvers on behalf of the Union Army.
Later, at a wedding of a dear friend, Lazarus, Mechach's pet bird rises from the dead and reveals the true identity of Sam Freedman as Mechach the slave, who had cleverly worked his way to ultimately purchase the land where he grew up as a bondservant. Readers will follow the struggles and triumphs of a slave that was hell-bent on reclaiming a denied heritage.
James tackles themes such as "passing" and "miscegenation" as touchstones for exploring the history of American racism. Peppered with several "popular" or "mass-market" fictional elements such as wily escapes, violence, sexual intrigue, and "sins of the father", this story is a thought-provoking and appealing piece.
