Women's Involvement in American Civil War Emphasized

Carol J. Cutrona's "By Lantern's Light" (published by AuthorHouse) details the methods the women initiated in setting up field and unit hospitals (often under fire), the primitive medical and surgical techniques used during the war, and the method of cooking for huge armies of men as they moved from one battle site to another, the women usually traveling in rolling wagons.

"After reading Mary Livermore's book in 1975, I researched the topic extensively, and I'm still learning about these outstanding women," the author tells about the book's inspiration.

Set at the beginning of the American Civil War, the book's story follows a band of Northern women who defy President Lincoln, congressional members and the army's medical bureau to organize the U.S. Sanitary Commission (the forerunner of the American Red Cross), procure supplies, set up army field hospitals, devise surgical procedures and render overall battlefield relief.

Carol J. Cutrona has been researching, writing, teaching and presenting lectures on the topic of "Women and the Civil War" for over 35 years. She taught classes related to this subject for 10 years, five of those years as an instructor in the Osher Lifetime Learning Institute program at the University of South Carolina - Beaufort.
