Author Wendy Vann has more than 25 years' experience as a counselor - more than 10 of those years were spent working with children with autism and sensory processing issues - and raised two boys with sensory processing issues, also known as sensory integration issues. She combines her professional knowledge and personal experience in a new guidebook for parents struggling to handle their children's problems, "Sensory Integration Plus: A Family's Story of Love and Learning." (published by Balboa Press).
Vann uses personal stories from raising her two boys to explain the real-life application of techniques designed to help children with sensory processing issues. She also explores the spiritual connection people have with their senses to aid parents in understanding the issue of sensory integration in a well-rounded way.
"Today parents are faced with an ever-growing list of developmental issues and diagnoses," Vann says. "There is no one parent handbook or training that guides them through difficult times. Schools are faced with more behavioral issues without training in behavioral management or an understanding of self-regulation."
An excerpt from "Sensory Integration Plus":
"We all learn in kindergarten about the five senses (taste, vision, hearing, touch, smell), but what we do not understand is the hidden senses, the proprioceptive (muscle and joints) and vestibular (movement) ones. We will also look at the internal sense of energy (tiredness or alertness) called interoception, and external sensing energy called exteroception."
