'Walkabout Through the Life of Jack Crombie' Reveals a Lifestyle Lost to the Ages

Walk a mile in the shoes of Jack Crombie.

That's exactly what his wife, Gwen, did to write his biographical book, Walkabout Through the Life of Jack Crombie." Sharing the story of his adventurous life, she reveals the life path of the Aboriginal senior traditional elder as he overcame hardships, cultural barriers and a foreign world.

A member of the Yankunytjatjara people, he grew up in the tribal world in Southern Australia. From those humble beginnings, he became acquainted to the "whitefellow" world and became a modeling cowboy, drover, rider in the circus and rodeo riding.

After a career-ending injury, "boy from the Nullabor" worked in the opal mines and later became a member of the South Australian Police Force as an Aboriginal Police Aide.

Crombie hopes that the book serves as an inspirational tool for future generations to learn that life is what they make of it.

"With no formal education, Jack cannot read or write," she says. "He dictated the entire book to me so that he could share his story with the world."

Gwen Crombie is an author, enrolled nurse and Australian. Her passions and work have taken her to over 50 Aboriginal communities. In addition, she teaches "Crossing Cultures" training and has a great deal of experience in training and mentoring Aboriginal staff and trainees. Her diverse experiences come from living for over 20 years with "a foot in both worlds." Crombie currently resides in Port Augusta, Australia.
