Domestic violence has been in the news quite a bit lately with the firing of an NFL player caught on tape punching his fiancé in an elevator. And while October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, one local author is very aware of the problem every day of the year.
While her husband is serving our country, Rhonda Ramsey has been waging war on domestic violence using the power of the written word. Ramsey, who writes as R.H. Ramsey, has published four books that she hopes, will change the way people view victims and survivors of abuse. The newest book was just released in August. "I had heard people saying things like 'if that were me, I would have done this," said Ramsey. "Or criticizing victims for not leaving. It can happen to anyone and you really have no way to know what you would do until you go through it." Ramsey's novels detail the lives of strong women, who have their own careers, and find themselves in abusive situations. Readers learn the pathology of the abuser and see that domestic violence does not always mean physical scars. Ramsey says it is vital to her to get across the message that those who are abused do not fall into any particular category of race, personality, or social class.Videos
