Inspired by his grandchildren's curiosity about his life, especially during the war years, author Joseph De Prest publishes his autobiographical work, titled Boys Don't Cry. De Prest's new book is the compelling real life war drama that reveals one family's endurance during World War II-especially during the German occupation of Belgium-through hunger, depravation and eventual triumph.
The book takes readers back to Belgium in 1942 where, in the midst of the German occupation, De Prest's heartwarming story comes to life through the eyes of a child. It portrays the different personalities of each member of a large family of 12, and the effects the occupation had upon them. It captures brilliantly the sights and sounds of war that in turn captivates audiences from all walks of life.
What makes De Prest's story so appealing to readers is its inherent ability to draw them into reflection on the different important areas in life. It contrasts the difficult challenges during World War II with today's modern conveniences brought about by a peaceful, prosperous and progressive life. It compares yesterday's large families to today's small, nuclear families. Such contrasts present numerous, valuable, life-changing lessons.
Evocative, enlightening and empowering, Boys Don't Cry is a book filled with great hope, joy and optimism. It is an amazing chronicle of hardships and triumphs, of survival, both humorous and compassionate. It is a stirring monument to the enduring strength of the human spirit.
