Do you ever contemplate the choices you have made throughout life leading to where you are today? Or better yet, why you made the choices that you did? In his new book, "Why Are You: A Sense of Identity," author and cardiologist Antonio Barquet breaks down human motivation and describes the driving forces behind one's actions.

Curious to understand the motives behind his own actions, Barquet began questioning the purpose for a "self." This journey of better understanding his own actions led Barquet through various behavioral studies resulting in his desire to help others understand the reasons behind their own choices.

A key component in Barquet's behavioral study focuses on how fear and desire combined with one's ego can shape their decision making. Barquet also uses insights he has gleaned from Buddhist training to help his patients deal with chronic diseases by educating them on why they make the choices they do.

"This book goes to the root of behavior," said Barquet. "It addresses the mechanisms of behavior and the reason for it."

"Why Are You: A Sense of Identity" allows readers to gain a better understanding of their "self" in addition to identifying behavioral patterns their loved ones may display. This understanding will assist readers in resolving conflicts by elevating the need for tolerance and compassion.
